Sonic’s $1.99 deal is back with two new crispy chicken wraps, just as McDonald’s reintroduces its long-awaited Snack Wrap. Let’s see which one comes out on top.
McDonald’s has recently rereleased the Snack Wrap to the world, and with that comes competition. About a week ago, Sonic’s $1.99 Deal returned, launching two Crispy Chicken Wraps at less than $2 each as part of it’s “FUN.99” Menu. Although it’s great to see the return of menus for both restaurants, the real question is: which chicken wrap will steal the spotlight?
Sonic’s $1.99 chicken wraps have two versions: The Cheesy Baja Crispy Tender Wrap and the Honey Chipotle Crispy Tender Wrap. They consist of Zesty Cheese Sauce or Honey Chipotle Aioli with shredded cheddar cheese, tomato, lettuce, and a crispy-tender wrap all around a soft tortilla.
Honey Chipotle holds 270 calories with 12g of protein, 29g of carbs, and 11g of fat. Meanwhile, Cheesy Baja holds 280 calories with 12g of protein, 28g of carbs, and 13g of fat.
The Ranch Snack Wrap holds 390 calories with 17g of protein, 31g of carbs, and 22g of fat. The Spicy Snack Wrap holds 380 calories, with 17g of protein, 30g of carbs, and 21g of fat.
The Sonic $1.99 Chicken Wrap isn’t the only exclusive item to this $1.99 deal. Sonic’s “FUN.99” menu is also inclusive with an Original Jr. Chicken Sandwich, Grilled Chicken Sandwich, Honey Chipotle Jr. Chicken Sandwich, Soft Pretzel Twists, and Slushes for $1.99.
However, this wasn’t the first occurrence of this limited-time menu. Last spring, from March 4th to May 5th, 2024, Sonic offered its $1.99 menu with these wraps. The fact that they did it again in the same week, with McDonald’s renaissance for the Snack Wrap raises some questions that this may not be a coincidence.
Compared to 2016, McDonald’s now only has two snack wraps (Ranch & Spicy) after the internet pleaded for its return. Many people expressed their dissatisfaction, stating that the removal of honey mustard and Chipotle BBQ sauces has diminished the variety of the Snack Wrap. With other flavors of Baja and Honey Chipotle, we may see people who prefer the wraps that Sonic gives, adding competition.
Sonic has an advantage over McDonald’s when it comes to pricing for its wraps. While McDonald’s Snack Wraps are priced at $2.99 each, Sonic’s $1.99 menu offers greater variety, including not just Chicken Wraps but also Sandwiches, Slushes, and more.
However, the Snack Wrap has had a bigger audience and strong appeal from people who missed its disappearance for nearly a decade. This was due to the difficulty for kitchens to prepare at a high rate. Consequently, it caused them to abandon it, according to K5 News.
Ultimately, it remains uncertain who will win this battle. Sonic offers lower prices and a wider variety, while McDonald’s has reintroduced their Snack Wraps due to the overwhelming demand from customers who remember how special that item made McDonald’s.
